Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a finished portfolio? Yes. This course is about getting your portfolio in front of buyers, so you need work that is ready to pitch. If you are not there yet, start with From Sketch to Portfolio. Do I have to take Parts 1 and 2 first? No, but the course assumes you know your target market, your ideal customer, and the brands you want to pitch. Parts 1 and 2 are where that groundwork happens. How much time will it take? The videos total about three hours. The assignments take longer, and they are where the work happens. Some are meant to be done the same day, like sending your first five pitches. Does it teach design software? No. The focus is the business of pitching and licensing your work. Are there live sessions? No. The course is self-paced, so you can work through it on your own schedule. Do I need Airtable? The Licensing Pipeline Tracker runs on Airtable’s free plan, and the setup guide walks you through copying it to your account. A spreadsheet works too if you prefer. Does the course include a contract? The course shows you what every licensing contract needs, the red flags to watch for, and how to request changes professionally. It points you to the Graphic Artists Guild Handbook licensing contract as a starting template. It is education, not legal advice. Will this guarantee I get licensed? No one can promise that. What this course gives you is a repeatable system: research, contacts, pitches, follow-ups, and client management. The designers who license consistently are the ones who keep running it. How long do I have access? As long as this course is offered by Telva's Toolbox (over 2 years to start but when it doesn't make business sense to keep it any longer it will be removed and you'll be notified.) What if it isn't a fit? Digital products are usually not refundable but if I can verify that you've watched less than 5% of the videos, you will receive a refund when requested within 5 days of purchase.

About the course

A finished portfolio is not a business yet. You put in the work. The collections are finished, the mockups look great, and the files are organized. And then the portfolio sits in a folder, because nobody explained what happens next. Which brands accept submissions? Who do you email, and what do you say? What do you send when an art director says yes? What do you do when they say nothing at all? Talent does not get your work licensed on its own. A system does. Pitch, License, Repeat gives you that system, step by step, and then shows you how to run it every month. WHAT YOU WILL LEARN Finding and Reaching Art Directors Videos 1 to 4. Research the brands on your list, find the right person to contact and verify their email, write a pitch with embedded images, and follow up professionally. Closing Deals and Managing Clients Videos 5 to 8. Respond when someone says yes, quote with confidence, handle counteroffers, review and negotiate contracts, deliver files like a professional, and turn one project into repeat work. Professional Communication and Industry Language Videos 9 to 11. Talk about your work without feeling sleazy, handle it when art directors go silent, and speak the language of printers, manufacturers, and art directors. Portfolio Marketing Videos 12 to 15. Build your portfolio ecosystem: a hub where your work lives, a discovery platform where buyers find you, and a PDF portfolio for closing deals. See full Curriculum below. WHAT YOU WILL WALK AWAY WITH Real work, done Every lesson ends with an assignment. By the time you finish, you will have • Pitches with 3 embedded images sent to 5 specific brands • Verified art director contacts saved in your Licensing Pipeline Tracker • A follow-up system that tells you which pitches need attention each week • A response template, a simple rate sheet, and your walk-away criteria written down • A licensing contract template and a practice contract revision request • A file delivery folder template, a tech sheet template, and a delivery email template • A client follow-up schedule, a testimonial request template, and a client database • Your elevator pitch and a terminology cheat sheet • Your three essential portfolio locations chosen, and a PDF portfolio ready to send WHAT IS INCLUDED 17 video lessons About three hours of focused instruction you can watch on your own schedule. An assignment in every lesson This is where the work gets done. Your pitches get sent in the assignments, not while you watch. Licensing Pipeline Tracker A free Airtable base with a setup guide, for tracking the brands you research, your contacts, your pitches, and your projects. Licensing Jargon PDF A glossary of industry terms with definitions and examples. Course workbook A page for every lesson’s assignment, space for the templates you build as you go, and the platform comparison tables at a readable size. Tech Sheet Template A ready-to-use technical submission sheet for delivering files to clients. Self-paced No live sessions. This course is for you if • You have a finished portfolio and a list of brands you want to work with • You want to license your work to brands, not just post it and hope • You would rather follow a proven process than guess at the next step • You are ready to do the assignments and send the pitches, not only watch the videos It is not the right fit if • You are looking for design software tutorials. This course covers the business of pitching and licensing. • You do not have a portfolio yet. Start with From Sketch to Portfolio. • You want live coaching. This course is fully self-paced. • You are looking for legal advice. The contract lessons teach you what to look for and when to bring in an attorney.

Telva Chase

I'm Telva Chase, founder of Telva's Toolbox and author of The Solopreneur's Guide to Surface Pattern Design, Volumes I and II. I came to surface pattern design in 2019, after a watercolor I sold at Portland's Saturday Market, Ocean Meets Sky, ended up in Columbia Sportswear's women's running line. Before that, I spent my career as the VP, Information Security, which explains my fondness for checklists, clear process, and files that are named correctly. I have also taken more than 450 SkillShare courses, so I know exactly what a course that wastes your time looks like. This one does not. I teach business first and design second, because most designers already have the talent. What they are missing is the process. I don't make promises and I tell it like it is with no fluff. If you don't want the honest truth about this business, please go to the big box educators who promise you the moon. Surface Pattern Design is hard work and nothing else will get you a sustainable income - not talent, wisdom, or hopeful thinking.
