About the course

Your patterns can say something. A beautiful floral pattern might be licensed for fabric or wallpaper. That same pattern with coordinating hand-lettered phrases can reach greeting cards, journals, wall art, pillows, apparel, stationery, and gift wrap. But lettering that looks like a first draft does not get licensed. Wobbly strokes, uneven spacing, and the wrong style for the market all signal amateur work, even when the pattern behind them is strong. Lettering on Repeat teaches hand lettering the way a pattern designer needs it: practiced, purposeful, and ready to work inside your collections. WHAT YOU WILL LEARN Video 2, Hand Lettering The difference between calligraphy and hand lettering, the supplies you need (including budget-friendly options), guided tracing of uppercase, lowercase, and alternate styles, and freehand practice. Video 3, Intermediate Lettering Typography anatomy, script, block, and decorative styles and the markets each one serves, controlled execution, optical spacing, composition, and how to digitize your lettering. Video 4, Advanced Lettering Lettering styles by market, integrating lettering with your patterns, digital tools and custom fonts, portfolio curation, trends, and pricing your lettering on its value. WHAT YOU WILL WALK AWAY WITH Lettering that is ready for your patterns • Four alphabet styles traced, uppercase and lowercase, plus freehand practice • Your name in script, block, and decorative styles • A working vocabulary of letter anatomy • Practice with composition layouts and pairing two styles • Your own hand-lettered motto • A plan for your first pattern that combines lettering with your illustrations WHAT IS INCLUDED 5 video lessons About 55 minutes of instruction, with pause points that tell you exactly when to practice. Lettering on Repeat workbook One exercise for each teaching video, including printable tracing pages and space to sketch. Free practice worksheet links Curated links to free downloadable lettering worksheets for your advanced practice. Self-paced No live sessions. THIS COURSE IS FOR YOU IF • You design surface patterns and want to add lettering to your collections • You are starting from scratch, or your lettering needs polish • You want lettering that fits specific markets, not just pretty words • You are willing to practice. Fifteen minutes a day makes the difference. IT IS NOT THE RIGHT FIT IF • You are looking for design software tutorials. The course covers the digitizing workflow, not step-by-step software instruction. • You want a traditional calligraphy course. The focus is hand lettering for pattern work. • You want live coaching. This course is fully self-paced. WHAT YOU NEED • A brush pen, such as Tombow Dual Brush Pens, or Crayola Super Tips on a budget • Smooth paper, such as Rhodia or Bristol • A pencil and an eraser • Optional, an iPad with Procreate and lettering brushes FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Do I need lettering experience? No. Video 2 starts at the very beginning, with the difference between calligraphy and hand lettering, supplies, and guided tracing. Do I need to take Parts 1 to 3 first? No. Lettering on Repeat stands on its own. Having some of your own patterns helps when you start combining lettering with your designs. What supplies do I need? A brush pen, smooth paper, a pencil, and an eraser. An iPad with Procreate is optional. You do not need expensive tools to start. How much time will it take? The videos total about 55 minutes. With the practice sessions, plan on about four hours, and you do not have to do it all at once. Does it teach Procreate or Illustrator? No. Video 3 walks through the professional digitizing workflow, and Video 4 covers digital tools and font creation at the strategy level, but the course does not include software tutorials. Is this a calligraphy course? No. The course explains how calligraphy and hand lettering differ and how they work together, but the focus is hand lettering for pattern design. Are there live sessions? No. The course is self-paced. How long do I have access? As long as this course is offered by Telva's Toolbox (over 2 years to start but when it doesn't make business sense to keep it any longer it will be removed and you'll be notified.) What if it isn't a fit? Digital products are usually not refundable but if I can verify that you've watched less than 5% of the videos, you will receive a refund when requested within 5 days of purchase.

Telva Chase

I'm Telva Chase, founder of Telva's Toolbox and author of The Solopreneur's Guide to Surface Pattern Design, Volumes I and II. I came to surface pattern design in 2019, after a watercolor I sold at Portland's Saturday Market, Ocean Meets Sky, ended up in Columbia Sportswear's women's running line. Before that, I spent my career as the VP, Information Security, which explains my fondness for checklists, clear process, and files that are named correctly. I have also taken more than 450 SkillShare courses, so I know exactly what a course that wastes your time looks like. This one does not. I teach business first and design second, because most designers already have the talent. What they are missing is the process. I don't make promises and I tell it like it is with no fluff. If you don't want the honest truth about this business, please go to the big box educators who promise you the moon. Surface Pattern Design is hard work and nothing else will get you a sustainable income - not talent, wisdom, or hopeful thinking.
