About the course

Talent isn’t the whole story. The voice that says you are not good enough. The comparison trap every time you open Instagram. The rejection that stops you from sending the next pitch. The schedule that runs you instead of the other way around. None of that shows up in your portfolio, but all of it shapes your career. Technical skills might get you opportunities. Your mindset and your soft skills decide what you do with them. Mind Over Motif gives you practical tools for both, one short video at a time. WHAT YOU WILL LEARN Video 2, The Growth Mindset Fixed vs. growth mindset, positive self-talk, the comparison trap, authenticity, progress over perfection, and celebrating small wins. Video 3, Quiet the Inner Critic Challenging limiting beliefs, breaking down overwhelm, self-compassion, self-care, and visualizing your success. Video 4, Building Resilience Challenges as opportunities, a process for handling rejection, turning failure into useful information, a resilience toolkit, flexibility, and patience. Video 5, Sustainable Creativity Self-care, the signs of burnout, your ideal creative conditions, decision fatigue, and time management that works with your creativity. Video 6, Communication and Your Personal Brand Plain-language communication, listening, presenting your work, personal branding, finding your unique voice, and emotional intelligence. Video 7, Building Connections Relationship building, community and support, industry events, strategic networking, and finding mentors. Video 8, Collaboration and Negotiation Collaborating with other designers, giving and receiving feedback, and preparing for a negotiation so you are paid fairly. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Do I need to take Parts 1 to 4 first? No. Mind Over Motif stands on its own and fits wherever you are in your creative career. Is this a therapy or mental health course? No. It is practical skill building for your mindset and professional habits. If you are struggling, please reach out to a qualified professional. How much time will it take? The videos total about an hour and a half. Most teaching videos run 8 to 15 minutes, and each exercise takes about 20 to 45 minutes. Why are the videos so short? So you can watch one and do its exercise in a single sitting. The practice is where the change happens. Does it teach design skills? No. This course focuses on mindset and soft skills: communication, relationships, collaboration, and negotiation. Are there live sessions? No. The course is self-paced. How long do I have access? As long as this course is offered by Telva's Toolbox (over 2 years to start but when it doesn't make business sense to keep it any longer it will be removed and you'll be notified.) What if it isn't a fit? Digital products are usually not refundable but if I can verify that you've watched less than 5% of the videos, you will receive a refund when requested within 5 days of purchase.

Your Name

I'm Telva Chase, founder of Telva's Toolbox and author of The Solopreneur's Guide to Surface Pattern Design, Volumes I and II. I came to surface pattern design in 2019, after a watercolor I sold at Portland's Saturday Market, Ocean Meets Sky, ended up in Columbia Sportswear's women's running line. Before that, I spent my career as the VP, Information Security, which explains my fondness for checklists, clear process, and files that are named correctly. I have also taken more than 450 SkillShare courses, so I know exactly what a course that wastes your time looks like. This one does not. I teach business first and design second, because most designers already have the talent. What they are missing is the process. I don't make promises and I tell it like it is with no fluff. If you don't want the honest truth about this business, please go to the big box educators who promise you the moon. Surface Pattern Design is hard work and nothing else will get you a sustainable income - not talent, wisdom, or hopeful thinking.
