Every style taught the same six ways

Each style video covers where the style comes from, its characteristics, how it is built, how it has changed across eras and places, what the tradition decides for you and what it leaves open, and an assignment where you design in the style.

Researched and cited history

History segments are researched and cited, checked against primary and museum sources, and illustrated with public domain and licensed images.

Respect built in

A full video covers how to draw on cultural traditions without borrowing sacred or ceremonial imagery, and why it matters for licensing.

Stands on its own

The Part Two Welcome gives you the structure words and nine-line spec you need, so you can start with Part Two even if you have not taken Part One.

A capstone collection

You finish by designing a mini collection, a hero print and coordinates, each with a complete spec.

Sound familiar?

• You describe a design as sort of a Moroccan-ish trellis and hope nobody asks a follow-up question. • You love toile, chinoiserie, or Art Nouveau but could not say what makes a design belong to the style. • A trend report names a style and you are not sure how to break it into motifs, layout, and color. • You want to draw on a cultural tradition but worry about borrowing something that is not yours to borrow. Style is not a mystery or a mood board. Every tradition has characteristics you can learn, name, and use.

Meet Telva Chase

Telva Chase is the founder of Telva's Toolbox and has been painting since she was 12. Her path into surface pattern design began in 2019, when she sold her watercolor Ocean Meets Sky at Portland's Saturday Market and Columbia Sportswear went on to use it in its women's running gear line. Her watercolor patterns now sell on Spoonflower under Truffle Art Design, and she is the author of The Solopreneur's Guide to Surface Pattern Design, Volumes I and II. Before design, Telva spent her career as a Chief Information Security Officer, where vague specifications cause expensive problems. She brings the same habit to pattern work: decide on purpose, check your work, and write it down so someone else can use it.
